În conformitate cu articolul R4227-34 din Codul muncii francez Installing a sound alarm system is mandatory for:
- Establishments where more than 50 people are usually present or gathered,
- Establishments handling and using flammable materials.
The sound signal must be audible throughout the building. The alarm sound is standardized in France so that everyone recognizes it as a fire alarm: it complies with the AFNOR NFS32001 standard.
Regarding public-access establishments, Type 4 alarms are mandatory for the following locations:
- Dance or game rooms accommodating 1 to 20 people
- Libraries accommodating 1 to 100 people
- Shopping malls, educational institutions, exhibition halls, administrative offices or banks, underground or aerial stations accommodating 1 to 300 people
- Restaurants, performance halls, indoor sports facilities, and workplaces accommodating 1 to 700 people
- Places of worship and museums accommodating 1 to 1500 people.
